It details the links between the anti-immigrant movement and white supremacy.

The Lies, Distortions and Fabrications of F.A.I.R.

Today, there is a great post on Eristic Ragemail discussing the many unfounded claims of FAIR (the Federation for American Immigration Reform). The group, which was listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, continues to be quoted consistently by mainstream media, with no regard to their extremist tendencies or funding sources.

A perennial canard of the nativists, and of FAIR, is the wholly untrue claim that immigrants overload the welfare system (such as it is). Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for welfare no matter how poor they may be. In fact, undocumented workers, contribute more in taxes and social security payments that they will ever see. Rather than being a burden, undocumented workers actually subsidize the Social Security fund and other social programs.

One can dissect almost every issue raised by FAIR and demonstrate its falsity or distortion. So why does FAIR continue to be trusted as a source of reliable information when so much of what they put out is patently untrue? The answer lies partly in the nativist network that FAIR and other nativist groups such as NumbersUSA have built.

There are many people who continue to buy into immigration myths propagated by the nativist network – they should know the truth.

Southern Poverty Law Center lists FAIR as hate group

The Eugenists, racists, and members of white supremacist groups haven’t gone away- they’ve simply found a new home: the anti-immigrant movement.

FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, has employed white supremacists in key leadershpi roles, has accepted over a million dollars from a eugenics foundation AND, as if that weren’t enough, has helped to bolster racist conspiracy theories throughout the country.

FAIR is not the voice of the mainstream, it’s the voice of individuals who have helped fuel the 40% increase in the number of hate groups in the US. These aren’t citizen advocacy groups, or simply groups of concerned folk- they are hate groups plain and tall.

The most terrifying number in all of this? A 35% increase in hate crimes against latinos. There has certianly been a similar increase in hate crimes against South Asians and Arabs, and increases in hate crimes against other marginalized groups.

A recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, outlines the story of FAIR as a hate group, and it justifies their official addition to the national list of hate groups maintained by the organization.

Also, for a more mainstream view of the rise of nativism this week, check out the dec. 17th issue of the New Yorker, would love ot know what you think about it.

Hate in the Mainstream

I was sitting down to watch my favorite tv show, when I accidentally turned on Lou Dobbs…. and listened to him for about 5 minutes (I couldn’t change the channel, I was mesmerized by the sharp stare in his eyes) ranting and raving, and spreading complete lies about the drivers license bill passed by Spitzer in New York earlier last month.

I asked myself one question: How could one man’s mistruths, veiled (or not so veiled) racism, and scapegoating be considered mainstream broadcasting fodder?

Then another one followed: He isn’t alone, is he?

No he certainly isn’t. Hate groups around the country are hiding their funding sources, changing their names, and carting out their bags of mistruths to the American public in mainstream media more than ever before.

This has happened in the past. America has gone through waves of Jim Crow, McCarthy, and countless other movements to attack and demonize the “other” among us- usually to prevent the American public from focusing on the real issues at the heart of our country : wars, education, healthcare, the economy.

Lou Dobbs and his band of merry scapegoaters are just singing the same song with different words- and the Anti-Defamation League has released a new report to chronicle this latest trend. It’s only by exposing hate in the mainstream that we can root it out in our own communities, and begin to move forward, move on. Because at the bottom of the immigration debate is a choice.

It’s a choice for each and every American: Do I follow Dobbs, or do I take the high-road. As I said above, we’ve been faced with this choice before, and back then some people chose to stop black kids from going to high school, to spit in their faces, and some chose to hold the door open for them.

It’s time for us to ask Americans to decide which side of history they will be on. Dobbs, or the side of dignity and respect.

Nativists (aka hate groups) front “experts” on immigration to kill drivers license in NY

That’s right- we know they do it. Now we have proof.

From the New York Immigration Coalition:

Albany, NY. The New York Immigration Coalition today released a white paper entitled, F.A.I.R. Hearings: An Analysis of the Intimate Connections Between the Experts Testifying Against the NYS DMV Policy and the Anti-Immigrant, Nativist Group F.A.I.R. The paper uncovers FAIRs direct connections to each of the so-called experts that both the Senate Majority and Assembly Minority have invited to testify at their sham hearings.

Following an Assembly Minority hearing on the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles recent policy change, which featured notorious anti-immigrant Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo, the Senate Majority held their own hearing, which featured a similar bench of so-called experts, fronting for the most prominent anti-immigrant, nativist organization in America: the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

The national anti-immigrant movement has picked the wrong issue to use as the new surrogate issue to promote its hateful anti-immigrant agenda. With the aid of New York State legislators in the Senate and Assembly, the national nativist movement has descended upon New York to prey on peoples legitimate fears about terrorism and exploit a common-sense policy for the benefit of their anti-immigrant agenda, said Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition. Senator Joe Bruno and Assemblyman Jim Tedisco should be ashamed that they have rolled out the welcome mat for fear-mongers under the guise of so-called credible experts.

The three star witnesses at the hearing are all intimately connected in a tight-knit web that leads back to one organization FAIR, and one person the father of the modern nativist movement John Tanton.

Invited experts to the hearing included the Center for Immigration Studies, the 9/11 Families for a Secure America, and the Coalition for a Secure Drivers License. As the white paper F.A.I.R. Hearings, reveals:

  • The Center for Immigration Studies was founded and funded by FAIR founder John Tanton. Forty percent of the Centers board of directors is made up of FAIRs board of directors or board of advisors.
  • The 9/11 Families for a Secure America is headed by a former director of FAIRs board of directors. In addition, three out of four of the groups official advisors are either on FAIRs board of directors or board of advisors. The fourth advisor is a fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies.
  • The Coalition for a Secure Drivers License was founded by two of FAIRs current directors on the board of directors.

The white paper also reveals that each of these three organizations is not only connected to FAIR, but also connected to each other, sharing advisors and directors. To get a copy of the white paper, email Milan at

Congressman to Address Extremist Group with Racist Ties

Hatewatch is at it again, telling the world the truth about organizations on the right. Does Rep. Ron Paul of Texas know that the Taft Club he plans to address in the coming weeks has racist ties to other organizations?

National Press Club Hosts Hate-Group “Immigration News Conference”

This is bunk. Hatewatch at the Southern Poverty Law Center has the boogie.

Migrants are consistently in danger. The stories of migrants being robbed, beat-up and left for dead, cheated, or extorted are endless. These stories are not told becasue migrants often do not approach the police, and are often too afraid to approach the police.

To my knowledge, there has been no comprehensive estimate of crime against migrants in the US. I believe the numbers would shock and terrify most.

Who are the perpetrators of these crimes? Well, many are American men. Particularly businessmen, or landlords who hold power over a migrants life.

Just yesterday an 56 year old American man used his position of power to extort money from restaurant workers. I love it when anti-migrant folks ask me what I don’t understand about “illegal”. Well, frankly I’d like to ask them the same. By continuing to marginalize and isolate migrants from our communities, the extortion, the crime, and the abuse will only continue. And I haven’t even started to talk about abuse against migrant women in particular….

Vigil Against Hate Crimes- 20-30 teenagers beat Latino workers in Oregon

We just received this action alert from CAUSA in Oregon:

Last Thursday, 20-30 white teenagers beat and threw stones at two Latino workers in the small town of Mulino.  CAUSA is appalled and outraged at this racist, violent hate crime.  Anti-immigrant sentiment has fueled countless other unreported violent acts against immigrant workers and families.  Now is the time for us say no to hate and to fight for dignity and respect for all.

We urge you to join human dignity groups, the immigrant community, and allies in a Vigil Against Hate Crimes:

When:  Sunday, June 3rd, at 6:00 pm
Where:  Carnegie Center Park, 7th and Jefferson, in Oregon City.

In case of rain, the vigil will move across the street to Atkinson Memorial Church.

This vigil is sponsored, so far, by Rural Organizing Project, Atkinson Memorial Church, Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, and the Coalition Against Hate Crimes.
