In a q&a session, one of the second graders told them that her mom “says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers.” The first lady replied that they have to make sure people living in the United States have the proper citizenship papers. She responded that her mom doesn’t have any papers, which prompted Michelle Obama to say that “we need to work on that.”
Of course, there’s a ton of nuance that’s missing but this exchange shows what we’re trying to do in the immigrant rights movement. We’re trying to keep families together – to make sure that this little girl’s mother is able to stay with her and her family in the United States.
(update: Frank Sharry from America’s Voice has a great article about this young leader in the Huffington Post. Check it out)
