On Saturday the President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called for an end to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement worksite raids. From the AP.
“I stand with other faith leaders and all of you gathered here today and with every immigrant family in this nation to call on our government to end immigration raids and the separation of families,” said Cardinal Francis George at an immigrants-rights rally at a northwest Chicago church.
Without naming President Barack Obama, George said the current administration can fulfill its promises of change by working toward immigration reform. The rally was one in a 17-city series of meetings organized by advocates of changes to U.S. immigration policy, including U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill.
Faith leaders, political leaders and community leaders are all calling for an end to the enforcement-only approach to immigration that thrived under the Bush administration. Let’s hope that these demands for change are met head on in the new administration.

The influx of illegal aliens is costing American taxpayers thousands of dollars. The Catholic Church’s strategy- flood the United States with even more illegal aliens until its law-abiding citizens and government relent and reform the very laws that its followers are violating.
The ill-founded notion that the raids of American businesses and the resultant deportation and/or incarceration of illegal aliens by the ICE are tearing marriages, families and children apart sidesteps the issue at hand. If the Church’s followers weren’t here illegally to begin with, their marriages, families and children wouldn’t be torn apart!
You don’t violate Federal Law then try to change it. It may work in their country but not in ours.
In that regard, the Catholic Church should:
– Inform its followers to immediately return to their native countries and avoid any further attempt at violating this Great Nation’s immigration laws; and
– Refrain from engaging in politics and inciting it followers (i.e. illegal aliens) from doing the same, thereby honoring and maintaining the separation between Church and State.
Thanks to the US Conference of Bishops and the Cardinal for expressing their justified moral outrage which is their Christian and biblical imperative. Catholics and people of faith must not be fooled into thinking that arresting dishwashers and janitors and meat plant workers is in any way keeping the United States safe from terrorists.
The idea that our immigration laws were designed to protect the United States against terrorists is a canard.
Quite simply, our immigration laws were promulgated to prevent foreign nationals from immigrating to the United States without proper consent from the United States government.
I repeat.
OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS WERE PROMULGATED TO PREVENT FOREIGN NATIONALS FROM IMMIGRATING TO THE UNITED STATES WITHOUT PROPER CONSENT FROM THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT.
If you don’t have permission from the United States government to be here- terrorist or otherwise, then you’re here illegally in violation of Federal Law. Indeed, the mere presence of illegal aliens in this country speaks volumes about the moral and ethical constitution of these individuals, not to mention their willingness to abide by the other laws and regulations of this Great Country. Simply put, they don’t care.
The population of illegal aliens in the United States is currently estimated to be about 11 million people. It is estimated that 57% are immigrants from Mexico, 24% are from other Latin American countries, 9% are from Asia, 6% are from Europe and Canada and 4% are from the rest of the world. In other words, 8 out of every 1o illegal aliens in this country are hispanic.
Illegal aliens continue to outpace the number of legal immigrants- a trend that has held steady since the 1990s. While the majority of these illegal aliens continue to concentrate in places with existing large communities of hispanics, they are now settling throughout the rest of the country, thereby adding to the ever increasing economic burden of this country. And there seems to be no end in sight.
Now comes the Catholic Church that condones the continued illegal entry of foreign nationals into this country, then cries foul when our government enforces our immigration laws by deporting and/or incarcerating them.
Again, the Catholic Church should refrain from engaging in politics and leave lawmaking and the enforcement of those laws to the United States government.
Put another way, you don’t want the government meddling in the affairs of the Church. I suggest that the Church restrain itself from doing the same.
