There is a fantastic Op-Ed in the NY Times today that speaks to the increasing number of state and local measures to enforce federal immigration law.
The piece is written by George Gascón, who is a former assistant chief in the Los Angeles Police Department and is currently the chief of the police department in Mesa, Ariz.
Gascon has years of experience and knows what he is talking about. The increased pressure on local law enforcement to combat unauthorized immigration pushes immigrants into the shadows and decreases public safety.
It is interesting to note that he is approaching this as a law enforcement official in Mesa, Arizona which is in Maricopa county where we have seen Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s unconstitutional and alarmingly hateful enforcement tactics.
I can’t do the piece justice, so read it here instead.
